7 Fun Facts: Declaration of Independence

1. It wasn't actually July 4
The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.
2. John Adams thought July 2 would be remembered...
John Adams had written to his wife Abigail: "The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival..."
3. The Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.
4. The last signing was 6 months later
Thomas McKean was the last to sign the Declaration of Independence in January, 1777.
5. Where did the word Patriotism come from
The word "patriotism" comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or "fatherland".
6. Jefferson and Adams died 50 years later
Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826, 50 years after the first Independence Day.
7. When did it become an official holiday?
In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday

A Nation’s Strength

By: Ralph Waldo Emerson

What makes a nation’s pillars high
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor’s sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly...
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Knoxville's Secrets

Favorites from Knoxville, TN
Good evening blogland! So I haven't been able to write because of all my traveling......but finally I have found sometime.
So I have been spending the past couple days in Knoxville a.k.a. "Knoxvull"......such an amazing town full of character and friendly individuals...accept the guy in the peanut store he literally kicked us out 45 minutes before close and was very rude about the whole thing, so avoid the Peanut Shop!!!...........Overall Knoxville was a very lovely town to visit.....here are my recommendations if your passing through.

 Rococo Boutique....This is my favorite shop out of all the shops in "Market Square"

Beautiful mural of a lady inside the store made from duct tape...
Outside of the store...

The Tomato Head......This was a very good and fun place to eat! All of their food was organic and locally grown veggies!!! They also had several vegan dished to choose from! Their specialty was homemade pizzas and bread! There was a window on their patio you could look inside and see their kitchen, very cool to watch! The quality of food was outstanding!! fresh and homemade defiantly make a difference! Staff was very attentive and friendly!

The Sun Sphere-...Very cool Sphere that overlooks the entire city of Knoxville.....it is what is left of the 1982 world Fair! Its stand 266 ft. high and the sphere is 75ft....the elevators are very slow and its not uncommon for them to stop--a little unnerving!

~Travelin' Woman~

Oh my where to begin......well today was defiantly an adventure! So let's talk about hiking. Today I really pushed my limits today! Today I hiked the trails of Fall Creek Falls State Park in Pikeville, Tennessee. I can't say that I have ever hiked such a beautiful area.............The park stretches a gorgeous 20,000 acres..........Fall creek officially became a state park in 1935, and recently celebrated its 75th year in 2011! It is the most visited state park in Tennessee...What I loved about this park so much is that the overlook is handicap accessible! Granted the trails are not .

Today has truly been amazing! If our family genealogy is correct, we may have met some distant relatives while visiting the park.........Today we met Ms. Dotty Knapp and her friend Ms. Brown.......I cannot say I have ever met such lovey women in my life! Dotty, if we can figure out the family tree may be a distant cousin on my fathers side from his grandmother. amazingly we found that we both have the same story that knapps came over from Ireland on the "Big Boat." Such an amazing discovery if we can prove it! If not I'm truly blessed that God allowed us to meet such a wonderful women! Who would have thought that 700 miles from home you could find "kin" LOL

And finally I finished my evening off at the Catfish Cabin for supper, where I broadened my taste buds a bit. For starters we had southern slaw, hush puppies, and pintos......followed by "Gator Tail" and "Frog Legs." Neither of which I have tried before......gator has got to be the most interesting food I have ever eaten it was quite chewy, but had very mild taste. Frog legs, I understand why they are considered a delicacy........very tasty and even better when dipped in hot sauce!!!

Hiking Tips for dummies*
  • Proper footwear means good support and a good sole for grip. NOT dollar flip-flops the bust half way up the mountain.....not to mention the nice, wet, SLIPPERY rocks!
  •  There's a reason the sign reads EXPERIENCED HIKING ONLY!
  • Water plunging from 256ft above may look graceful......but the best description I could give it is like walking in a hailstorm!!!
  • 56 degree water doesn't feel good no matter how hot ya are!
  • Just because its mountain water doesn't mean its fair game to drink!!!
So here are some pictures from todays adventure, hope you enjoy :)
